Description
Positioned at the cervicothoracic junction, the first thoracic vertebra (T1) is shown in lateral profile with the vertebral body anterior and the spinous process projecting posteriorly into the thoracic kyphosis. Superiorly, the T1 vertebral notch helps form the intervertebral foramen with C7, while inferiorly its inferior notch relates to the foramen for the T1 spinal nerve. The pedicle and lamina outline the vertebral arch behind the body, and the superior and inferior articular processes stack to guide motion between C7 to T1 and T1 to T2. Rib articulation is implied at this level, where the transverse process and costal facets relate to the first rib complex. T1 matters because it is the transitional vertebra where cervical mobility yields to the rib-bearing thoracic spine, and that change in facet orientation influences both biomechanics and symptom patterns. Foraminal narrowing at C7 to T1 can irritate the C8 nerve root, a common setup for pain radiating into the ulnar forearm and hand that can mimic distal entrapment. Surgeons also use T1 as a landmark when counting levels in the upper thoracic spine, and its relationship to the first rib and thoracic inlet frames approaches to apical lesions and cervicothoracic instrumentation. Use this lateral T1 view for gross anatomy and osteology teaching, spine level identification in radiology and surgical atlases, and clinical education on cervicothoracic junction disorders such as C8 radiculopathy and degenerative facet disease.
