Description
Arising from the medial epicondyle of the humerus via the common flexor tendon, the flexor carpi radialis is traced along the proximal forearm even from a posterior perspective, where it can be appreciated as it wraps from the anterior compartment toward the radial side. The muscle belly lies anteromedial in the proximal forearm, while its tendon becomes more distinct distally as it courses toward the wrist, lateral to flexor carpi ulnaris and medial to brachioradialis at the lateral border of the forearm. Deep to the superficial flexor layer, the radius (lateral) and ulna (medial) establish the bony corridor the tendon tracks toward the carpus and metacarpus. Landmarks at the elbow and wrist joint lines anchor proximal to distal orientation. Posterior viewing is useful when you want to relate an anterior-compartment tendon to palpable dorsal landmarks and to the osseous contours of the radius and ulna without losing the elbow and wrist as reference points. Clinically, the flexor carpi radialis tendon is a common graft choice and a frequent landmark for volar wrist surgery, including the flexor carpi radialis approach to the distal radius, where it helps guide dissection while protecting the radial artery that lies just lateral to the tendon. Small errors in identifying this tendon can shift exposure toward the palmaris longus or brachioradialis interval. Precision matters.
