Description
Posterior anatomy places the heart deep to the sternum but centered within the thorax, with the descending thoracic aorta tracking inferiorly just left of the vertebral column and continuing as the abdominal aorta. Running on the right of the midline, the superior and inferior venae cavae align toward the right atrium, while paired subclavian vessels course laterally into the upper limbs and the common iliac arteries and veins diverge into the pelvis and lower extremities. In the neck, the common carotid arteries ascend bilaterally with the internal jugular veins returning blood along a more superficial, lateral pathway. Arms are slightly abducted, so the axillary and brachial continuations read clearly into the forearm vascular arcs. A posterior whole-body view is where the systemic circuit makes anatomical sense as a continuous column, from the great vessels through the paravertebral corridor and into limb outflow and return. It is also the clearest teaching angle for appreciating why thoracic and abdominal aortic pathology, such as aortic dissection or aneurysm, can produce back pain and compromise branch perfusion to kidneys, gut, or lower limbs. Venous return is equally legible, supporting discussions of deep venous thrombosis propagation from the lower extremity into the iliac veins and inferior vena cava, with pulmonary embolism risk even though the pulmonary arteries are anterior.
