Description
Posterior anatomy of the adult female systemic circulation is rendered with the arterial tree in red and the venous return in blue within a translucent body outline. The thoracic and abdominal aorta descends just anterior to the vertebral column, giving off paired and unpaired branches that track laterally toward the intercostal spaces, abdominal viscera, and lower limbs, while the posterior venous pathways converge medially toward the superior and inferior venae cavae. Proximally, the heart sits deep to the sternum but the great vessels are followed as they pass superiorly toward the neck and distally toward the pelvis, with subclavian, axillary, brachial, iliac, femoral, and popliteal continuities implied by the limb distributions. Paravertebral vessels and the dorsal scapular and intercostal courses read clearly from this back-facing perspective. Posterior views are where students often finally understand the relationship between the descending aorta, the azygos system, and the posterior thoracic wall, a relationship that is easy to miss on standard anterior diagrams. This orientation also maps cleanly to clinical back-of-body landmarks used in vascular access and monitoring, and it supports teaching around common distribution patterns of atherosclerotic disease (for example, aortoiliac occlusive disease affecting buttock and thigh perfusion) and venous pathology such as deep vein thrombosis propagating from the calf through the popliteal and femoral veins.
