Description
Radiating from the distal leg into the ankle and foot, the anterior tibial artery continues as the dorsalis pedis artery on the dorsum, while the posterior tibial artery passes posterior to the medial malleolus and divides into the medial and lateral plantar arteries on the sole. Across the tarsal and metatarsal regions, arcuate and dorsal metatarsal branches course distally toward the toes, where dorsal and plantar digital arteries form fine terminal networks. Superficial venous channels drain proximally along the dorsum, converging into the great saphenous vein medially and the small saphenous vein posterolaterally, with accompanying deep veins (venae comitantes) tracking the named arteries. Dense pedal vasculature is where limb perfusion succeeds or fails. This x-ray style transparency helps clarify the relationship between the dorsalis pedis pulse point (lateral to the extensor hallucis longus tendon) and the plantar arterial arch, a pairing that matters when you correlate absent pulses with peripheral arterial disease, diabetic foot ischemia, or embolic occlusion.
