Description
Rendered in a lateral oblique perspective, the cerebral hemispheres dominate the superior and anterior aspect, with gyri and sulci clearly defining the cortical surface. Inferior and posterior to the cerebrum, the cerebellar hemispheres sit behind the brainstem, and the medulla continues caudally as the cervical spinal cord. Yellow cranial nerves emerge from the ventral brainstem and basal forebrain, then course anterolaterally and posterolaterally away from the intracranial compartment. Depth cues make the relationship between cortex, hindbrain, and nerve roots easy to read. Clinically, this angle aligns well with how clinicians localize brainstem and cranial nerve lesions when correlating deficits to anatomy, for example distinguishing midbrain involvement (oculomotor palsy, pupillary dysfunction) from pontine pathology affecting the trigeminal or facial nerve. It also supports teaching the crowded real estate of the posterior fossa, where mass effect from cerebellar hemorrhage or tumor can compress the fourth ventricle and distort the brainstem with rapid neurologic decline.
