Description
Gray-toned cerebral hemispheres dominate the composition, with cortical gyri and sulci defining the convexities of the cerebrum and a clear midline separation along the longitudinal fissure. Inferior to the cerebrum, the cerebellum sits posterior to the brainstem, and the brainstem continues caudally as the upper cervical spinal cord. Yellow peripheral nerve pathways radiate outward from the cranial base and along the spinal axis, visually separating central gray matter structures from their immediate neural outputs. Orientation is anatomical rather than decorative. Linking brainstem continuity to the upper spinal cord makes this a practical teaching view for localizing neurologic lesions, where a single clinical deficit pattern can distinguish supratentorial injury from brainstem stroke or high cervical cord compression. The color separation also supports discussions of cranial nerve involvement, for example dysphagia and dysarthria in lateral medullary (PICA) syndrome, or facial weakness with pontine pathology, while keeping the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem in one field. Good neuroanatomy starts with gross relationships. This layout makes them easy to teach. Use it in preclinical neuroanatomy and physiology courses to introduce central nervous system organization before moving into tract diagrams, and in patient education materials to explain why a cervical lesion can affect both upper and lower extremity function.
