Description
Originating at the stylomastoid foramen, the facial nerve (CN VII) fans within and beyond the parotid region, with the cervical branch coursing inferiorly from the lower border of the parotid gland toward the upper neck. Along the mandible you can expect the marginal mandibular branch to run anteriorly, while the cervical fibers descend superficial to the angle of the mandible and track toward the submandibular and anterior cervical compartments. Osseous landmarks of the skull and face, including the maxilla and mandible with the dental arcade, provide positional reference, and the auricle sits posterior-lateral to the nerve’s emergence near the mastoid process. Fine neural filaments are rendered as distinct yellow bundles against the craniofacial skeleton. Clear orientation. Clinically, the cervical branch matters because it supplies the platysma and becomes a surgical hazard at the inferior pole of the parotid gland and along upper neck incisions. Injury can occur during parotidectomy, submandibular gland surgery, rhytidectomy, or cervical lymph node biopsy, producing platysmal weakness and lower neck skin asymmetry that can be subtle but diagnostically telling. This view also helps separate extracranial facial nerve anatomy from the cervical plexus, a common point of confusion when learners first encounter overlapping superficial neck innervation.
