Description

Arising from the stylomastoid foramen, the facial nerve (CN VII) courses anterolaterally toward the parotid region before dividing into its terminal branches across the face. From this anterior perspective, the temporal branches sweep superiorly toward the forehead, the zygomatic and buccal branches radiate across the cheek toward the lateral canthus and upper lip, the marginal mandibular branch tracks along the inferior border of the mandible, and the cervical branch descends into the superficial neck. A parotid plexus pattern is suggested by the fan-like arborization lateral to the maxilla and mandible, with the bony landmarks of the frontal bone, nasal bones, maxilla, and the dentition providing reliable orientation. Venous structures in blue accompany the lower facial and submandibular region. An anterior facial nerve map matters most when you need to correlate surface anatomy with patterns of facial weakness. Bell palsy produces a lower motor neuron pattern with ipsilateral forehead involvement, while a supranuclear lesion spares the frontalis due to bilateral cortical input. Surgical planning hinges on these same trajectories: parotidectomy and facelift dissection place the temporal branch at risk as it crosses the zygomatic arch, and the marginal mandibular branch becomes vulnerable near the mandibular angle and along the jawline. Small nerve, big consequences. Use this illustration for head and neck anatomy teaching in medical and dental curricula, for neurology and otolaryngology lectures on facial paralysis localization, and for operative atlases describing parotid approaches or submandibular incision planning with attention to CN VII branches and nearby facial vessels. It also fits patient-facing education on expected distributions of weakness after trauma or iatrogenic injury. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
