Sectioned calvaria and cranial cavity are shown in profile, with the dura mater (pachymeninx) lining the inner table of the skull and closely apposed to the endocranial surface. Along the inner aspect of the dura, the arachnoid membrane is implied as the thin barrier spanning over the sulci, while the subarachnoid space opens between arachnoid and the pink pia mater that follows the cortical contours. Superficial to the meninges, cranial sutures demarcate the adult skull bones; deep to them, the meningeal layers organize from dura externally to pia internally. The layering reads lateral to medial as bone, dura, arachnoid, cerebrospinal fluid space, and pia on brain surface. That dural interface with bone matters in practice because it explains why epidural hematoma forms between the skull and periosteal dura after middle meningeal artery injury, classically with a temporal bone fracture near the pterion. Subdural hematoma, by contrast, tracks deep to dura at the dural border cell layer after tearing of bridging veins, so the distinction between potential spaces is not academic. This view also supports teaching the dural reflections and venous sinuses conceptually, even when the falx cerebri and superior sagittal sinus are not the primary emphasis. Clean planes.
