Presented in a coronal cut section of an adult male skull, the calvaria is opened to expose the cranial dura mater lining its inner table, with the periosteal (endosteal) layer closely apposed to bone and the meningeal layer reflected medially toward the midline. Between these layers you would expect to appreciate the potential dural spaces and the dural reflections that partition the cranial cavity, with the falx cerebri situated in the midsagittal plane and the tentorium cerebelli oriented more posteriorly and inferiorly. Deep to the dura, the cerebral parenchyma is transected to reveal the ventricular system, rendered in blue, including the lateral ventricles superiorly and laterally and the third ventricle in the midline, with the fourth ventricle positioned more caudally in relation to the brainstem and cerebellum. CSF spaces stand out. For teaching meningeal anatomy, this coronal perspective helps clarify why the dura is described as a pachymeninx and why its two-layer organization matters clinically: epidural hematoma forms between skull and periosteal dura (often after middle meningeal artery injury), while subdural hematoma tracks deep to the meningeal layer along bridging veins. The same dural reflections that stabilize the brain also create fixed edges where transtentorial herniation can compress the midbrain, and the midline ventricular contours in this plane provide a quick check for mass effect and midline shift.
