Seen from a posterior aspect, the central nervous system sits on the midline with the cerebrum and cerebellum superiorly and the spinal cord descending through the vertebral canal to the conus medullaris. Segmental spinal nerves emerge bilaterally and course laterally as dorsal rami to the intrinsic back muscles and skin, while larger peripheral pathways are suggested as they pass into the limb girdles to form the brachial plexus in the lower cervical region and the lumbosacral plexus over the pelvis. Distally, major mixed nerves track into the upper and lower limbs along expected posterior compartments, with cutaneous branches fanning across the trunk. A whole-body map, not a close-up. Posterior mapping matters because many high-yield neurologic findings localize to dorsal root and posterior column pathology, and this view keeps the midline cord and paired spinal nerve roots conceptually aligned with dermatomes and myotomes. It also mirrors common procedural anatomy: epidural and lumbar puncture trajectories are planned relative to the spinous processes, ligamentum flavum, and the dural sac, and radicular pain patterns from cervical or lumbar disc herniation are easier to teach when the segmental outflow is visually continuous from cord to limb. Clinicians think in distributions.
