Description
Anterior soft tissues of the male head, neck, and upper thorax are removed to expose the deep cervical layers, with the prevertebral fascia forming a firm fascial sheath immediately anterior to the cervical vertebral bodies and longus colli. Laterally, this prevertebral layer blends toward the transverse processes and scalene fascia, lying posterior to the carotid sheath and deep to the sternocleidomastoid, while the facial and superficial cervical muscles (including platysma) remain in contextual view. Superiorly the fascial plane approaches the skull base near the pharyngeal constrictor region, and inferiorly it continues into the root of the neck, where it relates to the cupula of pleura and the anterior scalene. For teaching the deep neck, this view offers a clean read on why the prevertebral fascia matters: it defines the posterior boundary of the retropharyngeal space and guides the spread of infection from the pharynx into the mediastinum via the so-called danger space. It also frames practical surgical and procedural anatomy, because anterior approaches to the cervical spine and dissection around the carotid artery and internal jugular vein require you to recognize the prevertebral layer posterior to the alar fascia and visceral fascia. A key landmark. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and head and neck modules to anchor fascial planes, spaces, and their relationship to the carotid sheath, vertebral column, and deep neck flexors, and in surgical texts discussing anterior cervical discectomy and drainage of deep neck abscesses.
