Description
Prominent sternocleidomastoideus muscles flank the anterior neck, each coursing obliquely from the mastoid process of the temporal bone inferomedially toward the manubrium sterni and inferolaterally to the medial clavicle. Superficial facial musculature, including orbicularis oculi and orbicularis oris, frames the orbital and oral apertures, while the temporalis and masseter occupy the temporal fossa and lateral ramus of the mandible. Inferiorly, the superior fibers of pectoralis major appear over the upper thorax, with the clavicles and superior sternum acting as palpable bony landmarks beneath the muscle origins. Fiber direction is clear. For teaching neck surface anatomy, an anterior view like this clarifies why the sternocleidomastoideus defines the cervical contour and partitions the neck into clinically referenced regions, including the anterior and posterior triangles.
