Description
Layered beneath the skin of the male head and neck, the superior pharyngeal constrictor forms a thin, quadrilateral muscular sheet wrapping the posterolateral pharyngeal wall and converging posteriorly onto the median pharyngeal raphe. Anteriorly, its fibers take origin from the pterygoid hamulus and pterygomandibular raphe, interdigitating with the buccinator at the level of the oral cavity, while superior fibers approach the pharyngeal tubercle of the occipital bone. Deep and medial to this constrictor, the pharyngeal lumen is implied; posterior to it, prevertebral structures along the upper cervical spine (including longus capitis and longus colli) provide a clear deep-plane reference. Orientation is lateral, emphasizing the relationship between the skull base superiorly and cervical vertebrae inferiorly. Short and clear. Clinically, the superior constrictor matters because its upper border defines the functional boundary of the nasopharynx and contributes to the pharyngeal phase of swallowing, where impaired contraction can leave residue in the oropharynx and contribute to aspiration risk. Surgeons and dentists also use the pterygomandibular raphe as a landmark for buccal mucosal injections and oropharyngeal access, and the superior constrictor lies immediately deep to that fibrous band, so misdirected instrumentation can enter the pharyngeal space. The depiction of the constrictor against the skull base and prevertebral musculature helps clarify pathways for deep neck infection spread, which can track posteriorly toward the retropharyngeal space.
