Description

Arising from the frontal nerve (V1) within the orbit, the supraorbital nerve exits the supraorbital notch or foramen at the superior orbital margin and immediately divides into medial and lateral branches that fan superiorly across the forehead. Terminal filaments course in the subcutaneous tissue superficial to the frontal bone, running toward the anterior scalp as far as the vertex, with smaller twigs crossing the midline near the glabella while lateral branches track toward the temporal line. Nearby landmarks typically included in this field are the orbit, nasal bones, maxilla with dentition, the auricle laterally, and the upper cervical vertebrae inferiorly, with superficial veins drawn in close association to the cutaneous nerve arborization. For procedures around the brow, this nerve’s exit point is the landmark. Supraorbital neuralgia, lacerations at the superior orbital rim, and iatrogenic injury during brow lift or frontal craniotomy can produce paresthesia or dysesthesia over the anterior scalp, and the pattern of terminal filaments helps explain why symptoms rarely respect a simple straight line. The illustration also supports teaching of trigeminal sensory territories by separating V1 distribution over the forehead from adjacent supratrochlear (medial) and zygomaticotemporal or auriculotemporal fields (lateral).
