Description
Arising from the frontal nerve in the orbit, the supraorbital nerve exits at the supraorbital notch or foramen of the frontal bone and then courses superiorly into the forehead, dividing into medial and lateral branches as it ascends in the subcutaneous tissue. An anterior skull view places this nerve immediately superior to the orbital rim and lateral to the glabella, with its fibers spreading over the frontal region toward the scalp. Nearby bony landmarks include the nasal bones and piriform aperture medially, the zygomatic process of the frontal bone laterally, and the maxilla and mandible inferiorly. Blue venous channels along the forehead accompany the superficial course of these cutaneous branches. Clinically, this trajectory defines the target for a supraorbital nerve block used for forehead laceration repair, brow procedures, and analgesia for frontal scalp surgery. Location matters. Palpating the supraorbital notch at the junction of the medial and middle thirds of the superior orbital margin helps avoid incomplete anesthesia and reduces the risk of intraneural injection. The same superficial anatomy explains sensory loss after trauma to the superior orbital rim and postoperative dysesthesia after brow lift incisions, and it frames the typical pain distribution in supraorbital neuralgia and some migraine phenotypes.
