Sectioned cranial anatomy centers on the tentorium cerebelli, the dural septum spanning posteriorly between the occipital bone and petrous ridges of the temporal bones, separating the supratentorial cerebral hemispheres from the infratentorial compartment of the cerebellum. Along its attached posterolateral margin, the transverse sinus tracks in the groove of the occipital bone, while the straight sinus runs at the junction of falx cerebri and tentorium toward the confluence of sinuses. Superior to the tentorium, the occipital lobes and posterior cerebral convexities are seen; inferior and posterior, the cerebellar hemispheres occupy the posterior cranial fossa. Bone landmarks and basal foramina outline the cranial cavity. Clear dural planes. This profile view matters because the tentorial edge defines the tentorial notch, the corridor for the midbrain and a common site of transtentorial (uncal) herniation with raised intracranial pressure. Venous sinus anatomy along the tentorium also drives operative planning in posterior fossa and occipital craniotomies, where injury to the transverse or straight sinus can cause rapid blood loss and venous infarction.
