Description
Sagittal sectioning through the adult male cranial cavity exposes the tentorium cerebelli as a dural septum spanning posteriorly from the petrous part of the temporal bone to the internal surface of the occipital bone. Superior to this horizontal dural fold lie the occipital lobes of the cerebrum, while the cerebellar hemispheres and vermis sit inferiorly in the posterior cranial fossa. Along its attached margins, the tentorium blends with periosteal dura at the skull base, and its free edge curves anteromedially toward the tentorial notch adjacent to the midbrain. That geometry matters clinically because the tentorium defines the boundary across which supratentorial mass effect can drive transtentorial (uncal) herniation, compressing the midbrain and affecting the ipsilateral oculomotor nerve. The dural reflections also anchor the major venous pathways, so appreciating where the tentorium meets the occipital bone and petrous ridge helps explain why injury or surgical manipulation near the transverse and superior petrosal sinus regions can produce problematic venous bleeding. A hard partition.
