Description

Anteriorly, the proximal humerus is presented with the caput humeri as a smooth hemispherical articular surface facing medially, superiorly, and slightly posteriorly toward the cavitas glenoidalis of the scapula. Lateral to the head, the greater tubercle and intertubercular (bicipital) groove provide contour at the anterior shoulder, while the lesser tubercle sits more anterior and medial. Superiorly, the clavicle approaches the acromion, and the coracoid process projects anterolaterally above the humeral head, framing the glenohumeral interval. A blue-highlighted band at the joint line reads as hyaline cartilage or the joint space emphasizing the articular relationship. That spatial arrangement is the mechanical basis of glenohumeral stability and instability. An anterior view like this helps clarify why anterior shoulder dislocation typically drives the humeral head anteroinferiorly relative to the glenoid and why associated lesions cluster at the anteroinferior labrum (Bankart) and posterolateral humeral head (Hill-Sachs). It also anchors surface and surgical anatomy for deltopectoral exposure, where the bicipital groove and tubercles guide orientation during proximal humerus fracture fixation and shoulder arthroplasty sizing. Orthopedic teaching files often need a clean anterior reference for the humeral head, tubercles, and their relationship to the scapula and clavicle when explaining instability patterns, osteoarthritis wear, or prosthetic head version. Use it in gross anatomy and kinesiology modules on shoulder biomechanics, in radiology correlation for AP shoulder and Grashey views, and in operative atlases describing the deltopectoral approach and subscapularis management. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
