Description
Running along the inferior margin of the pancreas, the inferior pancreatic artery courses transversely from right to left, lying anterior to the abdominal aorta and inferior vena cava and deep to the stomach. Proximally it arises from a branch of the superior mesenteric artery region and sends small pancreatic rami superiorly into the head and uncinate process, with additional branches extending toward the body of the gland. Nearby, the superior mesenteric vessels descend anterior to the left renal vein, while the liver occupies the right upper quadrant and the spleen sits posterolateral to the gastric fundus. Small. An anterior depiction of this vessel is useful because the inferior pancreatic artery becomes a practical landmark in the vascular arcades around the pancreatic head, where it may anastomose with branches of the anterior and posterior superior pancreaticoduodenal arteries and contribute to collateral flow between the celiac trunk and superior mesenteric artery territories. That collateral pathway matters in celiac axis stenosis from median arcuate ligament compression, where augmented pancreaticoduodenal flow can predispose to true aneurysms that present with upper abdominal hemorrhage. Surgeons planning a pancreaticoduodenectomy or approaching the uncinate process from the right also benefit from seeing how this artery tracks along the lower pancreatic border near the superior mesenteric vessels.
