Running along the posterolateral thigh, the long head of the biceps femoris forms a broad fusiform belly that becomes superficial beneath the skin as it descends toward the knee. Medially, the hamstring mass is completed by semitendinosus and semimembranosus, while laterally the long head blends proximally with the posterior compartment contours and distally converges toward the fibular head. Near the distal third of the thigh, the biceps femoris tendon defines the lateral boundary of the popliteal fossa as it passes posterolateral to the knee. Superficial fascial planes and dermal contouring emphasize how close this muscle lies to the surface in the male posterior view. Clear landmarks.
