Description
Running deep to the ramus of the mandible, the maxillary vein is traced in lateral profile as it courses through the infratemporal fossa and relates closely to the sphenomandibular ligament. Posterior to the maxilla and inferior to the zygomatic arch, the vessel lies adjacent to the pterygoid musculature and the region of the pterygoid venous plexus, then passes toward the parotid gland where it contributes to formation of the retromandibular vein. Bony landmarks of the skull, including the maxilla with dentition, mandibular body and condyle, zygomatic bone, orbit, and nasal aperture, provide reliable spatial reference. Arterial pathways are overlaid for orientation against the venous drainage pattern. For head and neck anatomy teaching, a lateral view clarifies how deep facial venous drainage runs behind the maxilla rather than superficially across the cheek, and why the infratemporal fossa is a high-stakes neighborhood during dental anesthesia and posterior maxillary procedures. Injury to vessels around the pterygoid plexus can produce brisk bleeding or a hematoma after an inferior alveolar nerve block, and the venous connections in this territory help explain routes for spread of odontogenic infection toward the cavernous sinus via emissary pathways.
