Description
Running along the medial longitudinal arch on the plantar aspect of the adult male foot, the medial plantar vein courses anteriorly from the calcaneal region toward the base of the first metatarsal, collecting tributaries from the medial sole and hallux. Deep to the plantar skin and plantar aponeurosis, it tracks with the medial plantar artery and the medial plantar nerve, staying medial to the flexor digitorum brevis and adjacent to the tendons of flexor hallucis longus as they pass toward the great toe. Underlying osteology is visible, including the calcaneus posteriorly, the talus and navicular more superiorly and medially, the cuneiforms, and the metatarsals and phalanges distally. Articular surfaces at the tarsometatarsal, metatarsophalangeal, and interphalangeal joints provide bony landmarks for the vessel’s distal drainage territory.
