Description
Running in the infratemporal fossa as a branch of the mandibular nerve (V3), the auriculotemporal nerve is shown arising by two roots that clasp the middle meningeal artery just medial to the neck of the mandible before reuniting posteriorly. From there it courses posterolateral to the lateral pterygoid region, passes deep to the parotid gland, and ascends with the superficial temporal vessels anterior to the auricle. Sensory twigs to the temporomandibular joint sit proximal to its ascent, while distal branches distribute to the skin of the temporal scalp and contribute autonomic fibers to the parotid. That arterial “loop” is the landmark most learners miss. It clarifies why dissection or surgery in the infratemporal region can endanger both the middle meningeal artery and an adjacent trigeminal sensory nerve, and it helps explain variable patterns of auriculotemporal neuralgia or postoperative dysesthesia around the tragus and temple. Parotid relevance is not academic either, because postganglionic parasympathetic fibers from the otic ganglion hitchhike along the auriculotemporal nerve to the gland, and misdirected regeneration after parotidectomy can produce Frey syndrome (gustatory sweating) over the temporal skin. Ideal for gross anatomy teaching of V3 branches, head and neck surgical anatomy, and dental curricula that cover TMJ innervation and regional anesthesia. It also fits atlases and review articles addressing the relationship of trigeminal nerves to the middle meningeal artery, parotid approaches, and temporal scalp sensory territories in adult male anatomy.
