Description
Shown in lateral profile, the male cranium presents the frontal bone anteriorly, parietal bone superolaterally, and occipital bone posteriorly, with the temporal bone forming the inferolateral wall around the external acoustic meatus and mastoid process. Suture morphology is readable along the coronal region between frontal and parietal bones, the squamous suture between parietal and temporal bones, and the lambdoid suture between parietal and occipital bones. The zygomatic bone projects anterolaterally to form the cheek prominence and contributes to the lateral orbital rim, while the maxilla sits anterior and inferior to the orbit, continuous with the nasal aperture. Inferiorly, the mandible articulates with the temporal bone at the temporomandibular joint, with the mandibular ramus rising posterior to the molar dentition and the body extending anteriorly to the mental region. A lateral skull view offers clean access to landmarks used in trauma assessment and operative planning, because fracture lines often propagate along sutures and thinner regions such as the temporal squama and orbital walls. The relationship of the mandibular condyle to the articular eminence is clear here, making it a good teaching plate for TMJ dislocation patterns and for understanding why condylar fractures can shorten the ramus and alter occlusion.
