Description
Presented in lateral profile, the male cranium includes the frontal bone with the supraorbital margin, parietal bone superiorly, and the squamous temporal bone forming the lateral cranial wall, with the coronal, squamous, and lambdoid sutures demarcating their junctions. Anteriorly, the orbit, nasal aperture, maxilla, and zygomatic bone define the midface, while the zygomatic arch bridges posteriorly toward the temporal region. Inferiorly, the mandible is articulated at the temporomandibular joint, with the alveolar processes supporting an intact adult dentition. Male skull morphology is often taught through the lateral view because sexually dimorphic landmarks read cleanly in profile: the prominence of the glabella and supraorbital ridges, the relative robustness of the zygomatic arch and mastoid region, and the mandibular body and gonial angle. Those same contours guide clinical work, from planning surgical approaches to the zygomaticomaxillary complex and orbital rim after midface trauma, to interpreting facial asymmetry and occlusal changes when mandibular fractures or TMJ degenerative disease alter the mandibular position. Suture visibility also reinforces cranial growth patterns and the distinction between normal suture lines and fracture lucencies.
