Description
Anterior neck anatomy is rendered with the thyrohyoideus (thyrohyoid muscle) lying deep to the infrahyoid strap muscles and spanning from the oblique line of the thyroid cartilage superiorly to the inferior border of the body and greater horn of the hyoid bone. Superior to the laryngeal framework, the mandible and lower cranial base provide bony context, while posteriorly the cervical vertebrae and intervertebral discs establish the relationship of the larynx and hyoid complex to the cervical spine. The thyroid cartilage forms the anterior and lateral wall of the larynx, with the thyrohyoideus positioned anterolaterally, immediately inferior to the hyoid and anterior to the prevertebral column. Functionally, the thyrohyoideus is the most direct muscular link between the hyoid and thyroid cartilage, so its line of pull is central to teaching elevation of the larynx during swallowing and modulation of laryngeal position during phonation. This relationship matters in dysphagia workups: reduced hyolaryngeal excursion is a common finding after anterior cervical spine surgery or in neuromuscular disease, and the thyrohyoideus is one of the few muscles that can approximate the hyoid and larynx without relying on mandibular fixation. Its proximity to the superior laryngeal neurovascular bundle also makes it a useful landmark when discussing external approaches near the thyrohyoid membrane and the internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve. Ideal for gross anatomy teaching of the infrahyoid region, head and neck surgery primers, and speech-language pathology materials that need a clean depiction of hyolaryngeal mechanics in an adult male.
