Description
Running superficially across the lateral face, the transverse facial vein courses anteriorly from the region of the parotid gland toward the buccal area, typically lying inferior to the zygomatic arch and over the masseter muscle. Its close relationship to the parotid duct is apparent, with the duct taking a slightly more superior, straight path as it crosses the masseter before turning medially to pierce the buccinator. Nearby landmarks in this head and neck dissection-style view include the temporalis superiorly, orbicularis oculi around the orbit, and orbicularis oris encircling the oral fissure. Small venous tributaries are shown communicating with the superficial facial venous network and draining posteriorly toward the retromandibular venous system. For parotid and midface procedures, this venous segment matters because it sits in the same superficial plane as common access routes to the parotid duct and anterior border of the parotid gland.
