Description
Palmar ulnocarpal ligaments are shown spanning the volar, medial side of the wrist, extending from the distal ulna and ulnar styloid region toward the proximal carpal row. From an anterior (palmar) perspective, the ulnolunate and ulnotriquetral components form a fibrous arc running distal and slightly radial across the radiocarpal articulation, lying superficial to the proximal carpal bones. The lunate sits more central, with the triquetrum positioned ulnarly and dorsally, and the pisiform projects on the ulnar volar corner as a sesamoid within the flexor carpi ulnaris tendon. Metacarpals and phalanges continue distally in anatomical alignment for orientation. Palmar ulnocarpal ligament integrity matters whenever you are assessing ulnar-sided wrist pain and carpal instability. Disruption at the ulnocarpal side often travels with triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) injury and can permit abnormal lunate and triquetrum motion during forearm rotation, contributing to painful radiocarpal loading and reduced grip. Surgeons and hand therapists also track these fibers when discussing ulnocarpal abutment patterns and planning ulnar-sided approaches that must respect the volar capsuloligamentous restraints.
