Description
Running distally along the posterior compartment of the crus, the posterior tibial artery is traced from its origin at the tibioperoneal trunk after the popliteal artery bifurcation, passing inferiorly toward the medial malleolus before dividing into the medial and lateral plantar arteries in the sole. Medially, its course parallels the tibial nerve, while the fibular (peroneal) artery branches laterally toward the fibula and the deep posterior musculature. Anteriorly in the leg, the anterior tibial artery continues toward the dorsum of the foot, and superficial venous channels such as the great saphenous vein can be appreciated along the medial limb, contrasting with the deeper paired venae comitantes that accompany the arterial trunks. Landmarks are clear. The medial malleolar region becomes a focal point for the terminal segment.
