Posterior Tibial Vein, Lateral View

Description

Running deep in the posterior compartment of the leg, the posterior tibial vein is shown in lateral profile as it courses from the plantar foot, passes posterior to the medial malleolus within the tarsal tunnel, and ascends along the posterior surface of the tibia. Paired venae comitantes flank the posterior tibial artery, and perforating branches communicate with the superficial venous network along the calf and ankle. Proximally, the vessel continues toward the popliteal fossa where it contributes to formation of the popliteal vein after union with the fibular (peroneal) veins. Depth matters here. Lateral visualization clarifies relationships that are easy to lose in a purely medial diagram, including the vein’s position deep to the gastrocnemius and soleus and its close association with the tibial nerve and flexor tendons as all three traverse the retromalleolar region. Clinically, this is the deep vein interrogated in suspected distal deep vein thrombosis on compression ultrasound, and its tibial nerve adjacency explains why edema, hematoma, or post-traumatic scarring near the medial ankle can complicate neurovascular assessment. Surgeons also reference this corridor during posterior tibial artery exposure and when planning flap pedicles that depend on intact posterior tibial vascularity. Use this plate in lower-limb anatomy teaching for medicine, nursing, and physiotherapy programs, or in vascular surgery and radiology materials that need a clean depiction of deep calf veins versus the superficial saphenous system.
