Description
Running along the posterior humerus, the profunda brachii vein (deep brachial vein) is shown accompanying the profunda brachii artery within the posterior compartment of the upper arm, deep to the triceps brachii. Proximally it courses near the radial nerve in the radial (spiral) groove, then tracks laterally toward the lateral intermuscular septum before communicating with the axillary venous system. Superficial venous landmarks are also visible in the arm, with the cephalic and basilic veins positioned more superficially and laterally and medially, respectively, and the median cubital vein bridging them across the cubital fossa. Deep and superficial drainage are contrasted clearly. Posterior emphasis matters because the profunda brachii vessels sit in the same surgical neighborhood as the radial nerve, a relationship that becomes clinically concrete in midshaft humeral fractures and posterior approaches to the humerus. A long segment of the vessel typically parallels the nerve in the groove, so hematoma, iatrogenic injury, or distorted anatomy during fixation can involve both neurovascular structures. This view also reinforces why superficial venipuncture targets (median cubital, cephalic, basilic) do not reflect the deeper venous return pathways that accompany arteries and nerves. Small space.
