Description

Arising from the lateral surfaces of the lumbar vertebral bodies and transverse processes, the psoas major is rendered bilaterally as it descends along the anterolateral aspect of the lumbar spine toward the pelvic brim. From a posterior perspective, the muscle bellies sit medial to the iliac fossae and lie anterior to the sacrum and ilium, framing the lumbar vertebrae while remaining deep to the posterior abdominal wall. Superiorly, the inferior ribs and thoracolumbar junction provide bony context; inferiorly, the proximal femora and hip joints mark the muscle’s course toward the lesser trochanter as part of the iliopsoas complex. Orientation is clear. Left and right relationships read cleanly. This posterior view matters because it helps reconcile an often confusing idea for learners: a muscle that flexes the hip and stabilizes the lumbar spine is visually accessed from behind while occupying an anterior compartment relative to the posterior pelvic ring.
