Description
Oriented in anterior (costal) perspective, the scapula is presented as it lies against the thoracic wall, dominated by the smooth subscapular fossa and bordered by the medial (vertebral) and lateral (axillary) margins. Laterally, the scapular neck expands into the glenoid cavity, which faces anterolaterally toward the head of the humerus to form the glenohumeral joint. Superiorly, the acromion projects to meet the lateral clavicle at the acromioclavicular joint, while the coracoid process is expected to sit anterosuperior to the glenoid as a stout anterior hook. Landmarks matter. For teaching shoulder mechanics, an anterior scapular view clarifies how the glenoid’s orientation trades bony constraint for mobility, leaving stability to the labrum and capsuloligamentous structures. That relationship underpins common injury patterns: anterior glenohumeral dislocation typically occurs with the arm abducted and externally rotated, risking a Bankart lesion at the anteroinferior labrum and placing the axillary nerve at risk as it courses inferior to the joint near the surgical neck of the humerus. The acromion and distal clavicle also anchor discussion of acromioclavicular separation and why clavicular displacement follows ligament failure patterns.
