Description
Arising along the posterior margin of the lesser wing of the sphenoid, the sphenoparietal sinus is traced in the dura at the anterolateral floor of the middle cranial fossa, lateral to the sella turcica and anterior to the cavernous sinus. From an inferior (basal) view, it sits just medial to the sphenoid ridge and adjacent to the dural reflections over the temporal pole, where it receives small meningeal and superficial cerebral venous tributaries. Nearby landmarks typically visible in this perspective include the cavernous sinus region, the internal carotid artery as it courses through the cavernous segment, and the cranial nerves emerging around the clivus and petrous apex. Small, variable, and often overlooked, the sphenoparietal sinus matters because it lies on the operative corridor used in anterior skull base and parasellar approaches, where dural venous bleeding can be brisk and anatomically confusing. Its relationship to the cavernous sinus and to the meningeal venous drainage along the sphenoid ridge also makes it relevant when teaching dural arteriovenous fistulas and other pathologic shunts of the middle cranial fossa, as venous outflow patterns can determine symptoms and hemorrhage risk. A frequent teaching point is variability: some specimens show a well-formed channel, while others show only small venous lakes along the lesser wing. Use this basal view to support neuroanatomy and head and neck anatomy teaching on dural venous sinuses, cavernous sinus region relationships, and cranial nerve topography at the skull base. It also fits well in neurosurgical atlases, radiology teaching files correlating MRV/CTV venous channels at the sphenoid ridge, and preoperative planning materials for parasellar and anterior clinoid region work.
