Description
Posterior (dorsal) view of an adult female skeleton places the hands in emphasis, with the carpal bones, metacarpals, and phalanges highlighted against the uncolored axial and appendicular skeleton. Proximally, the radius and ulna articulate with the proximal carpal row, and distally the five metacarpals diverge from the carpus to the digits, each forming metacarpophalangeal, proximal interphalangeal, and distal interphalangeal joints. The thumb lies lateral in anatomical position, with its shorter, two-phalange configuration contrasted against the three-phalange rays of digits II to V. Carpometacarpal alignment and digital length gradients are easy to read. Clear landmarks. Dorsal hand anatomy matters because many clinically relevant bony contours are palpated and assessed from the posterior aspect, from the metacarpal heads at the knuckles to the dorsal base of the first metacarpal at the trapeziometacarpal joint.
