Description
Posterior anatomy of the male upper limb is presented with muscles removed, leaving the scapulae, posterior ribs, and thoracic vertebral column as bony landmarks beneath a mapped network of superficial lymphatic vessels. Superficial lymphatics course in the subcutaneous tissue along the posterior arm and forearm, tracking distally near the dorsum and then ascending proximally toward the deltoid region and posterior axillary fold. Lateral collecting vessels follow the cephalic vein territory toward the infraclavicular (deltopectoral) nodes, while medial pathways accompany the basilic vein territory to the cubital (epitrochlear) nodes and then into the axillary nodal basin. Blue superficial veins provide orientation against the green lymphatic channels. Clear relationships. This posterior perspective matters when you need to teach or plan drainage patterns that are not obvious from an anterior view, including how dorsal hand and posterolateral forearm lymph ultimately reaches the axillary nodes. It also supports clinical reasoning in upper-limb lymphedema after axillary lymph node dissection or radiation for breast cancer, where superficial collateral pathways around the posterior shoulder and scapular region may become prominent. Sentinel node mapping and patterns of cellulitis-related lymphangitis also make more sense when the cephalic and basilic territories are compared side by side.
