Description
Posterior scalp and upper neck anatomy is rendered with the superficial temporal vein highlighted as it descends in the temporal region, immediately anterior to the external acoustic meatus and superficial to the temporalis fascia. Superiorly, the vessel’s frontal and parietal tributaries course over the squamous temporal bone toward the root of the zygomatic arch, while inferiorly it continues toward the parotid region to contribute to the retromandibular vein. Occipital and posterior auricular venous pathways are shown posterior and inferior to it, with the occipital bone and upper cervical vertebrae providing fixed osseous landmarks. Nerve trajectories in the postauricular and occipital scalp track in parallel planes near these superficial veins. Posterior orientation makes the superficial temporal vein easier to localize relative to the auricle and the external acoustic meatus, which matters during temporal scalp incisions and flap elevation when bleeding can be brisk and obscures the field. This relationship also frames common venous access and complication scenarios, including inadvertent cannulation during preauricular procedures and bruising during superficial temporal artery biopsy when venous tributaries are mistaken for the artery. Keep the parotid tail in mind. Venous drainage patterns here help explain why superficial scalp infections and postauricular hematomas can spread along loose areolar tissue planes toward the mastoid region.
