Description
Posterior to the clavicle and superior to the scapular spine, the suprascapular vein is traced as it courses laterally across the superior border of the scapula toward the suprascapular notch, then turns medially and anteriorly to drain toward the subclavian venous system at the root of the neck. Adjacent venous channels along the posterior shoulder and upper chest suggest continuity with the axillary and subclavian veins, while nearby brachial plexus elements occupy the interscalene and supraclavicular region, running deep to superficial landmarks of the posterior triangle. Relationships around the suprascapular notch are kept clear, with the vessel passing over the notch in close proximity to the suprascapular nerve as it enters the supraspinous fossa. Small branches are included. Orientation stays in anatomical position. This posterior perspective matters because the suprascapular neurovascular bundle is a common pain generator and an operative landmark, and the notch region is where you think about entrapment at the superior transverse scapular ligament and iatrogenic injury during arthroscopic and open approaches around the suprascapular notch. Venous anatomy is often left out of teaching diagrams, but it becomes clinically relevant during suprascapular nerve blocks, posterior portal placement, and when interpreting postoperative hematoma patterns around the supraspinatus fossa. It is a tight corridor.
