Sagittal section through the female breast (mamma) reveals Cooper’s suspensory ligaments (ligamenta suspensoria mammae) as fibrous septa traversing the subcutaneous adipose tissue and anchoring the dermis to the deep pectoral fascia over pectoralis major. Glandular lobules with alveoli sit more centrally and posteriorly within the fat, their lactiferous ducts coursing anteriorly toward the nipple-areolar complex. Posterior to the retromammary space, the pectoral musculature lies anterior to the ribs and intercostal muscles, establishing the deep boundary of breast mobility. Clear landmarks. Understanding the suspensory ligament network matters because it explains both breast contour and characteristic clinical signs: shortening or tethering of these septa by invasive carcinoma produces skin retraction and dimpling, while edema can accentuate a peau d’orange appearance as lymphatic drainage becomes impaired. This section also clarifies why lesions may move relative to the chest wall, a mass confined to superficial tissues and Cooper’s ligaments behaves differently on exam than one fixed to deep fascia or pectoralis major.
