Description

Anterior neck anatomy centers on the butterfly shaped thyroid gland, with right and left lobes flanking the upper trachea and meeting across the midline as the isthmus. Superior thyroid arteries descend to the superior poles, running anteroinferiorly along the gland’s capsule after branching from the external carotid arteries, while inferior thyroid arteries ascend to the posteroinferior aspects of each lobe from the thyrocervical trunks. Capsular branches and fine arterioles form a dense plexus over the anterior surface, crossing the isthmus and spreading laterally toward the lobar margins. Rich vascularity. This anterior arterial map matters in thyroidectomy and central neck surgery, where early control of the superior pole pedicle helps limit blood loss but risks injury to the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve as it courses near the superior thyroid artery.
