Description
Sectioned in the sagittal plane, the male heart is opened to expose the right atrium superiorly and the right ventricle inferiorly, with the tricuspid valve spanning the atrioventricular junction. Three valve cusps (anterior, posterior, and septal leaflets) form the valvular orifice, their free margins tethered by chordae tendineae to papillary muscles arising from the right ventricular wall; the septal leaflet lies medial, adjacent to the interventricular septum. Posterior to the tricuspid apparatus, the thicker left ventricular myocardium and the mitral valve are also visible, with the aortic root superior and the pulmonary outflow tract arising from the right ventricle toward the great vessels. For teaching and clinical reference, a sagittal section clarifies how leaflet coaptation depends on the subvalvular apparatus, not just the annulus, and it makes the relationship to the septum easy to read. That matters in functional tricuspid regurgitation, where right ventricular dilation and papillary muscle displacement increase tethering and prevent leaflet closure, and in endocarditis where leaflet perforation or ruptured chordae creates an eccentric regurgitant jet.
