Description
Centered in the female pelvis, the urinary bladder is shown with emphasis on its superior surface and the anteriorly directed apex (vertex vesicae). The dome of the bladder rises superior to the base (fundus) and neck, with the apex marking the anterior midline where the median umbilical ligament (urachus) continues toward the umbilicus. Laterally, the bladder’s superior surface slopes toward the right and left walls, the peritoneal reflection draping over it before passing posteriorly toward the uterus and anterior vaginal wall. For teaching, the apex matters because it anchors the embryologic urachus, a tract that can persist as a urachal sinus, cyst, or (rarely) urachal carcinoma presenting along the midline between bladder and umbilicus. Surgeons also use the apex as a practical landmark when entering the space of Retzius and during suprapubic cystostomy placement, where the peritoneal reflection on the superior bladder surface must be respected to avoid intraperitoneal entry. Midline anatomy. Little margin for error. This profile-style depiction supports pelvic anatomy and urogenital blocks, helping learners connect the bladder’s external surface anatomy with peritoneal relationships in the female pelvis and with common operative corridors used in urogynecology and urology. It also fits well in journal figures discussing urachal remnants, suprapubic access, or female lower urinary tract surgery. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
