Description
Presented as a radiographic X-ray style animation, the cardiac silhouette is built from the chambers and great vessels most responsible for contour on a standard PA chest projection. Superiorly, the aortic arch and main pulmonary trunk sit anterior to the left atrium, while the superior vena cava descends on the right border toward the right atrium. Inferiorly, the left ventricle forms the dominant left heart border as it tapers to the apex, and the inferior vena cava enters the right atrium from below near the diaphragmatic interface. Coronary arteries and cardiac veins are introduced as surface tracings over the myocardium, tracking along the atrioventricular and interventricular grooves. Radiographic interpretation lives and dies on borders. By sequencing each structure on and off, the animation makes it easier to link the visible contour to anatomy, so you can recognize when a prominent right heart border suggests right atrial enlargement, when a bulging left mid-heart points toward dilation of the pulmonary trunk in pulmonary hypertension, or when a globular, enlarged silhouette raises concern for pericardial effusion rather than isolated chamber hypertrophy. Small shifts in the apex position and the left ventricular contour become easier to read when you watch the myocardium and great vessels assemble in layers.
