Description

Beginning at the renal papillae, urine collects in the minor calyces, converges into major calyces, and pools within the funnel-shaped renal pelvis before narrowing at the ureteropelvic junction. The paired kidneys sit retroperitoneally, with the renal hilum oriented anteromedially, and the proximal ureter descends inferiorly on the anterior surface of psoas major. As the sequence progresses, the ureters course distally toward the urinary bladder, entering its posterolateral wall obliquely before urine exits through the bladder neck and short female urethra to the external urethral orifice. Flow is the point. Clinically, the renal pelvis and calyceal system are where hydronephrosis declares itself when outflow is blocked, classically at the ureteropelvic junction or by an obstructing calculus in the proximal ureter. Animation helps you track the continuous lumen from calyx to ureter and visualize how peristaltic waves propel urine past points of narrowing where stones lodge and where edema can worsen obstruction, correlating with flank pain and hematuria.
