Description
Centered on the retroperitoneum and lesser pelvis, the sequence tracks the paired kidneys with their cortex and medulla tapering into papillae, minor and major calyces, and the renal pelvis that continues inferiorly as each ureter. Ureters descend anterior to the psoas major toward the pelvic brim, then curve anteromedially to enter the posterolateral bladder wall at the ureterovesical junction. The bladder base (trigone) and the short female urethra are shown in continuity as urine passes from collecting system to outlet. Peristaltic ureteric waves and progressive bladder filling make the spatial relationships easy to read. Function is woven into the anatomy: filtration at the nephron level feeds the collecting ducts, calyces, and renal pelvis, then flow proceeds to the bladder for storage and coordinated voiding through the urethra. Motion matters here because ureteric peristalsis, the anti-reflux obliquity of the intramural ureter, and the bladder neck mechanics are hard to grasp in a single frame. Expect clear teaching value for common pathology, including obstructing ureteral calculi with upstream hydroureter and hydronephrosis, vesicoureteral reflux at the ureterovesical junction, and ascending urinary tract infection, which is more common in women given the short urethral length. A surgical landmark is implied as the distal ureter courses near the uterine artery and lateral fornix of the vagina, the relationship that drives ureteral injury risk during hysterectomy.
