Description
Radiographic X-ray styling reveals the major salivary glands as semi-opaque soft-tissue masses against the craniofacial skeleton: the parotid glands lie anteroinferior to the external acoustic meatus and posterior to the mandibular ramus, while the submandibular (submaxillary) glands sit inferior to the mandibular body, wrapped around the posterior free edge of the mylohyoid. Medial to the mandible, the sublingual glands occupy the anterior floor of mouth, superior to the mylohyoid and lateral to the genioglossus. As the animation progresses, the glands resolve sequentially from the surrounding soft tissue, then their principal ducts trace forward, Stensen duct crossing the masseter and turning medially to pierce buccinator, and Wharton duct running anterosuperiorly toward the sublingual caruncle. Orientation stays clinically familiar. Pathology reads differently when you can track a duct in motion. Following Wharton duct along the lingual aspect of the mandible clarifies why sialolithiasis commonly obstructs the submandibular system and why pain and swelling spike around meals as saliva attempts to pass a fixed narrowing. The parotid segment helps with differential localization in acute parotitis and mumps, and it frames the surgical stakes around the facial nerve plexus within the gland even when the nerve itself is not the primary radiographic target. Animated staging also mirrors cross-sectional interpretation in CT and sialography, where gland density and duct course must be mentally reconstructed.
