Description
Radiographic rendering isolates the major salivary glands against the bony landmarks of the male mandible and skull base, with the parotid glands positioned posterolateral to the mandibular rami and extending superiorly toward the zygomatic arch. Inferior and medial to the body of the mandible, the submandibular (submaxillary) glands occupy the submandibular triangles, while the sublingual glands sit more anteriorly in the floor of mouth, just superior to the mylohyoid and medial to the mandibular alveolar process. As the sequence plays, gland contours and radiodensity shift with the simulated X-ray angle, clarifying depth relationships between soft tissue and the mandibular cortex. Ductal courses are implied in the expected trajectories toward the oral cavity. Clear landmarks. Obstruction and infection concentrate in predictable anatomy: submandibular sialolithiasis often forms along Wharton duct as it runs from the deep gland around the posterior free border of the mylohyoid to the sublingual caruncle, while parotid pathology tracks toward Stensen duct as it crosses the masseter and pierces the buccinator. Animation helps when teaching why a calcification projected over the mandibular body on one view may localize to the submandibular region once the projection changes, and why gland position relative to the mandible can obscure early enlargement. The moving X-ray perspective also reinforces how overlapping teeth, mandible, and hyoid can complicate interpretation of soft-tissue shadows in the suprahyoid neck.
