Description
Centered on a true mid-sagittal section of an adult male head, the animation positions the tongue from apex to root against the hard and soft palate superiorly and the floor of mouth and mandible anteriorly. Sequential emphasis brings out the intrinsic tongue fibers and the extrinsic muscles, including genioglossus fanning from the genial tubercles, hyoglossus rising from the hyoid, styloglossus coursing anteroinferiorly from the styloid process, and palatoglossus forming the anterior tonsillar pillar. Posteriorly, the mucosal-lined pharyngeal tube is traced from nasopharynx behind the nasal cavity to oropharynx behind the oral cavity and into the laryngopharynx, with the epiglottis and vallecula defining the interface between airway and alimentary tract. Orientation stays strict: anterior is toward the lips, posterior toward the cervical spine, superior toward the cranial base, inferior toward the hyoid and larynx. Clinical reading of this anatomy starts with the tongue base and pharyngeal wall, where small changes in volume or tone affect the airway and swallowing bolus path. Obstructive sleep apnea commonly relates to posterior displacement of the tongue and soft palate, while dysphagia after stroke often reflects impaired tongue propulsion and delayed pharyngeal constrictor contraction, leaving residue in the valleculae and pyriform recesses.
